A Community Cut Off: 2021 Painesville Township

At The Hose Company, we take pride in manufacturing Hydrauli-Flex hoses—a name synonymous with durability, reliability, and exceptional performance. When projects demand nothing less than the best, our hoses rise to the challenge, delivering unparalleled performance in even the toughest environments. One such project was the restoration of the retaining wall on Madison Avenue in Lake County, Ohio.

The Challenge: A Community Cut Off

Erosion and sinkage had compromised the retaining wall on Madison Avenue, causing a critical section of the road to collapse into the sloped embankment leading to the Grand River. Public safety concerns forced the road to close on April 17, 2020, leaving over 20,000 residents of Painesville Township to navigate inconvenient detours. The solution required an innovative and robust engineering effort to stabilize the embankment and restore access.

The Solution: Two Phases, One Mission

The Great Lakes Construction Company spearheaded the project with a dual-design approach:

  1. Sheeting Wall Stabilization: In the initial phase, a new sheeting wall was installed in front of the damaged eastside wall. Horizontal tie rods secured the new structure to the old, creating a stable foundation to build upon.

  2. King Pile Caisson System: The second phase addressed the more severe disrepair on the westside. For this, Great Lakes Construction turned to International Construction Equipment (ICE®) and their 66 Vibratory Hammer/Extractor. This powerful equipment drove 48-inch Spiralweld pipe piles into the glacial till. Each pile was drilled to a depth of 55 feet and reinforced with a rebar cage and high-strength 4500 psi concrete. Once completed, the existing failing retaining wall was removed, transferring the “landslide” pressure to the king piles.

Restoring Madison Avenue and Community Connectivity

The successful execution of this project was a testament to the collaboration between Great Lakes Construction, ICE® equipment, and the reliability of Hydrauli-Flex hoses. Despite delays caused by soil conditions and material challenges, the project was completed in October 2021, bringing relief to Painesville Township residents and restoring a vital roadway.
