The project involves a variety of machinery, including three vibratory hammers, two diesel impact hammers, and several clamping accessories, all designed to ensure precision and efficiency in a tight work environment.

Despite ongoing ferry operations every 45 minutes, Subsurface has managed to maintain access for passengers by employing an ICE® 33 Vibratory Hammer to create a temporary walkway. This strategic use of equipment ensures minimal disruption while the old wooden structure is dismantled and the new bridge takes shape.

Stretching over 12 square miles and 1,800 feet below the surface, these tunnels produce a whopping 4 million tons of rock salt every winter, making Ohio the 5th largest producer of rock salt in the U.S. 🧂

This setup is ideal for efficiently driving sheet piles in restricted areas beneath the bridge, streamlining the construction process. The J.B. Fay team has expressed enthusiasm about the ICE® 14C’s capabilities, planning to use the same configuration for the extraction of temporary sheet piles as the project progresses.

For these crucial tasks, the J.F. Creamer crew has deployed the ICE® 44B Vibratory Driver/Extractor, paired with the ICE® 55 Dampener. The ICE® 44B features a built-in vibration suppressor that significantly reduces the transmission of vibrations to the crane. When enhanced with the ICE® 55 Dampener—equipped with a system of elastomers that mimic the action of rubber-like polymers—this setup achieves superior dampening capabilities. The result? A more efficient, effective, and safer operation for driving 45-foot sheet piles into the ground.

OCCI Inc., awarded the subcontract for foundational work, understood the importance of having the right equipment to tackle such a massive undertaking. This is where we come in. To support their efforts, International Construction Equipment ICE® provided a powerful 115-50 Rotary Head Drill, complete with 100 feet of 30" centralized auger flighting. This state-of-the-art drilling equipment is designed to handle the demanding requirements of the Mega Site Project, ensuring that the foundation for the railroad expansion is robust and reliable.

As the project progresses, a significant aspect involves driving over 3,000 piles to establish a robust foundation for the new bridge. To date, 1,200 piles have been successfully driven, utilizing an impressive array of equipment from the ICE® fleet. The complexities of the geological conditions in the area required specialized machinery, and that’s where the expertise of Archer Western and Traylor Bros. came into play.

The ICE® 115-50 and 150-50 drills have been instrumental in navigating the challenging rock formations that sporadically surface throughout the Old Tampa Bay waterway. These machines exemplify the power and precision needed for such a large-scale operation.

The N.C. Department of Transportation entrusted Balfour Beatty with the responsibility of overseeing this crucial project. With bridges over 50 years old requiring replacement, Balfour Beatty stepped up to the challenge by employing cutting-edge techniques that protect the rich history, traditions, and culture of Down East.

Using the International Construction Equipment ICE® 44B and 66C equipment, Balfour Beatty effectively installed trestles and the mega template for the new bridge. To drive the 36-inch concrete pilings, they added a new ICE® I-62 Diesel Impact Hammer to their arsenal. This powerful equipment was expertly run on the first setting with a 12-inch cushion, ensuring the 110 ft concrete piles were not overstressed—a testament to the skill and expertise of the Balfour Beatty team in technical driving in North Carolina.

Pile Driving Challenges and Solutions

The project is complex, and every deep foundation endeavor comes with its own set of challenges. During construction, GPC crews faced practical refusal while driving pipe piles for the New High-Rise Bridge using the ICE® Model 44 Vibratory Driver and Extractor. Recognizing the need for a more powerful solution, ICE® VA Branch Service Manager Shawn Stack intervened. After assessing the situation, he recommended upgrading to the ICE® Model 66 Vibratory Pile Hammer to effectively drive the new piles, while the ICE® Model 44 was used for extracting the old ones.

Wisconsin-based Lunda Construction Company, with a history dating back to 1938, took on the monumental task of overseeing this project. Early in the construction phase, the team encountered significant challenges with an Atlas Copco rotary head powered by a third-party power unit. Unfortunately, the underpowered unit caused restrictions that impeded the drilling process.

When Lunda Construction faced these equipment malfunctions, they turned to the ICE® mid-west service team, who swiftly provided solutions. This collaboration led to the decision to purchase the ICE® Hydraulic Drill: Model HS-50, paired with a 230H Power Unit, a game-changer for the project.

The foundation work for this ambitious 10-acre site has been awarded to Bolander, a company with a rich history dating back to 1924. Known for their expertise in public and private projects across the Midwest, Bolander is well-equipped to handle the challenges of this large-scale undertaking.

To ensure the successful placement of over 1,600 10-12” caissons, Bolander turned to International Construction Equipment ICE® for reliable foundation equipment. Their collaboration with an ICE® representative led to the selection of an ICE® 33 Vibratory Driver/Extractor, paired with an ICE® 55 Wood Pile Clamp fitted with caisson jaws. This innovative setup enabled Bolander to drive all 1,600 piles efficiently while minimizing wear on the jaws by turning the clamp 180 degrees.

The foundation work for this cutting-edge facility was handled by GROUP Contractors from Baton Rouge, LA. To tackle the challenging soil conditions at the site, they relied on International Construction Equipment ICE® equipment, specifically the ICE® HB-85 Hydraulic Rotary Head, powered by an ICE® 460T Power Unit.
