Powering the ICE Equipment on the I-70 Rocheport Bridge Replacement Project
Missouri, a vital hub in the United States’ freight transportation network, plays a key role in connecting the nation's logistics. The heart of this system is Interstate 70 (I-70), which runs across the state, connecting vital markets and facilitating the flow of goods. Among the crucial infrastructures on I-70 is the Rocheport Bridge, a continuous two-span subdivided Warren through truss bridge that spans the Missouri River. This bridge, constructed in 1960 and extensively rehabilitated in 1993, has been a lifeline for Missouri’s freight movements, carrying over 42,000 vehicles daily and supporting a freight value of about $100 billion annually.
As the bridge nears the end of its structural lifespan, Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is making strides to ensure that I-70 continues to serve as a vital corridor. The I-70 Rocheport Bridge is set for a $240 million replacement, ensuring that freight traffic continues to move efficiently within and through Missouri. The new bridge will accommodate more than 12 million vehicles annually, ensuring minimal disruption during construction while providing safe passage for the next century.
This ambitious project requires a sophisticated, precise approach to construction—enter Lunda, the contractor awarded the job to replace this iconic bridge. Lunda turned to ICE® for innovative equipment solutions capable of handling the demanding nature of the task, particularly the installation of large diameter caisson piles for the foundation of the new bridge.
The ICE® 110 Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractor was called into action, equipped with a specialized quad beam designed to handle the oversized, heavy pipe piles needed for the project. This unique setup, with its four caisson clamps, allows for secure handling and smooth movement of the piles, ensuring that the installation process runs efficiently.
For different types of soil and pile requirements, ICE® also provided the ICE® 50B Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractor. This versatile equipment offered the flexibility needed for smaller diameter caissons and sheet pile installations, enabling Lunda’s team to tackle various challenges across the project site with precision and ease.
At The Hose Company, we’re proud to be a part of the effort, supplying Hydrauli-Flex hoses to ICE® equipment for this project. Hydrauli-Flex hoses are an essential component in ensuring the success of the vibratory hammers used in pile driving. With their exceptional durability and performance under high-pressure conditions, Hydrauli-Flex hoses provide reliable hydraulic flow to the equipment. This consistency is crucial in maintaining the high level of performance required for demanding projects like the I-70 Rocheport Bridge replacement.
Hydrauli-Flex hoses are designed to handle the heavy-duty tasks demanded by vibratory hammers, ensuring reduced risk of leaks and failures while maintaining peak operational efficiency. This durability makes Hydrauli-Flex the perfect match for ICE® equipment, contributing to the safety and success of projects like the Rocheport Bridge replacement.
As the new bridges over the Missouri River are set to last for over 100 years, we are grateful to work alongside the ICE® and Lunda teams on this monumental project. Together, we are helping to build a bridge that will support Missouri's vital freight corridor for generations to come.
