Newport’s Bridge of the Future

As the manufacturer of Hydrauli-Flex hoses, at The Hose Company, we are proud to have been part of the James Street Bridge replacement project in Newport, Delaware. Nearly a century old, this vital transportation artery was overdue for a much-needed upgrade to ensure safety and connectivity for the community. Mumford & Miller Concrete, Inc., entrusted with the $15 million contract, successfully overcame the challenges of modern infrastructure repair by incorporating innovative equipment and expertise.

Innovation Meets Complexity

Replacing the nearly 100-year-old bridge was no small task. The James Street Bridge not only connected communities but was also located near aging sewer systems that required careful protection during the construction process. To address these complexities, Mumford & Miller utilized the ICE® 50ZR Vibratory Driver/Extractor, an industry-leading solution known for its Zero Resonance technology.

This equipment, powered by Hydrauli-Flex hoses, installed sheet piles to create a specialized barrier around the sewer lines, minimizing risks of disruption. The ICE® 50ZR’s Zero Resonance feature allowed for a smooth, jolt-free operation—comparable to gently shifting gears on a steep incline. This precision ensured that nearby sewer lines and infrastructure remained intact while the construction work progressed efficiently.

Quiet Strength, Seamless Results

One of the highlights of this project was the minimal noise impact on nearby residential areas. Vibratory equipment is often associated with loud operations, but the ICE® 50ZR, supported by Hydrauli-Flex hoses, exceeded expectations. Even with its placement near housing developments, the equipment operated quietly, ensuring the local community was undisturbed throughout the construction process.

A Milestone Achieved

With construction completed, the new 5-span, 394-foot James Street Bridge stands as a testament to innovation, precision, and collaboration. The project, finished in September 2022, underscored the importance of combining top-tier equipment like the ICE® 50ZR with reliable components such as Hydrauli-Flex hoses. Together, these technologies enabled a safe and efficient transformation of Newport’s infrastructure.

From everyone at The Hose Company, congratulations to Mumford & Miller Concrete, Inc., and the ICE® team for their outstanding work on this project. We are honored that Hydrauli-Flex hoses played a critical role in powering the future of transportation while safeguarding the environment and community.
