The South Alabama Mega Site Project: A Key to Baldwin County’s Growth
The South Alabama Mega Site Project is a monumental development initiative that promises to enhance Baldwin County’s position as a thriving hub for commerce. Valued at $12.5 million, this project is poised to change the landscape of the region, which is already the 11th fastest-growing metro area in the United States. The 3,009-acre site, roughly half the size of JFK Airport, will foster growth through expanded railroad infrastructure and an enhanced connection to the Port of Mobile.
A significant portion of the project’s funding, approximately $5.5 million, is dedicated to the development of the railroad component. A key feature of this upgrade is the on-site rail spur connecting Bay Minette to the CSX mainline, extending 32 miles to the Port of Mobile and throughout the Midwest. This railroad expansion is essential to facilitating the flow of goods and supporting regional economic development.
In the heart of this project, OCCI Inc. was awarded a subcontract for foundation work, responsible for ensuring that the site can support the heavy infrastructure being built. To tackle this massive task, OCCI recognized the need for specialized drilling foundation equipment. That’s where ICE® and its state-of-the-art equipment came into play.
ICE® 115-50 Rotary Head Drill: A Workhorse for a Mega Project
For this demanding job, OCCI turned to the ICE® 115-50 Rotary Head Drill, equipped with 100 feet of 30” centralized auger flighting. This powerhouse of a drill is designed to meet the high demands of large-scale foundation work, drilling deep and efficiently to prepare the site for the next phase of construction. The drilled holes will be filled with pipes, grout, and rebar cages to reinforce the foundation for the railroad expansion.
