A Strong Foundation for the Future: The Bulkhead Replacement Project in Newport, Rhode Island

At The Hose Company, we are proud to manufacture Hydrauli-Flex hoses, an essential component of the hydraulic systems powering ICE® equipment used in various demanding construction projects. One such project currently underway on a military installation in Newport, Rhode Island, is the bulkhead replacement project, which is transforming the infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of military operations.

This massive undertaking is not just about updating old structures; it's about laying a solid foundation for future improvements, ensuring that the installation remains a vital hub for military and research activities. The contractor for this project, Reagan Marine Construction, is a seasoned professional with over 50 years of experience in marine and waterfront construction, specializing in pile driving, steel sheeting installation, demolition, and dredging.

Reagan Marine Construction: A Legacy of Expertise

Reagan Marine’s reputation for excellence is built on decades of successful projects for military clients. Their ability to complete complex and challenging tasks on time and within budget has made them a go-to contractor for waterfront construction. When the bulkhead replacement project began, they knew the challenges would be tough, especially given the deteriorating condition of the existing pier and bulkhead. However, their confidence in their equipment and partners set the stage for a successful endeavor.

Enter the ICE® 22 Vibratory Driver/Extractor

One of the key players in this project was the ICE® 22 Vibratory Driver/Extractor, a piece of equipment that proved to be indispensable. Initially, Reagan Marine brought in the ICE® 22 when their own ICE® Model 416 and Power Pack needed maintenance. However, after a quick consultation with the local ICE® Sales and Service Team, they rented the ICE® 22 and quickly realized its potential. Despite their ICE® 416 being repaired, Reagan Marine chose to keep the ICE® 22 on-site, as its exceptional performance in tough conditions made it a standout tool for this project.

The ICE® 22 helped Reagan Marine tackle the extraction of old, concrete-filled steel piles that were buried deep in the ground and in poor condition. These piles were a significant obstacle to the construction of the new combi-wall, which was necessary to support the future expansion of the installation. Paired with the ICE® Model 55 Clamp, the ICE® 22 delivered superior performance, making the extraction process much more efficient. It was able to break through hard layers of soil with ease, increasing productivity and helping to keep the project on track.

Hydrauli-Flex Hoses: Reliable Under Pressure

A key feature of the ICE® 22’s outstanding performance is its robust and flexible hydraulic hoses, powered by Hydrauli-Flex. These hoses are designed to withstand the high pressures and harsh environments commonly encountered in marine construction, such as the ones found on this project. Hydrauli-Flex hoses are built for durability and flexibility, ensuring that the ICE® 22 and other equipment can perform at peak efficiency, even in the most challenging conditions.

The Hydrauli-Flex hoses that power the ICE® equipment were put to the test during this project, helping to ensure that the extraction of the old piles went smoothly and efficiently. Whether it was the tough vibratory forces required to remove the piles or the reliability needed to keep the operation running smoothly, Hydrauli-Flex hoses were integral to the success of the project.

A Strong Foundation for Future Growth

The new combi-wall will consist of alternating 24-inch diameter pipes and PZC-19 sheet piles, anchored to a concrete and HP deadman system. This structure is designed to be strong, durable, and flexible, ensuring that it can support the future needs of the installation. With the bulkhead replacement and pier renovation in full swing, this project will help ensure the long-term stability of the infrastructure, allowing the installation to adapt to changing military and research demands.

To further enhance the stability of the existing pier, an ICE® I-19-V2 Diesel Impact Hammer was also used to drive the pier support piles to their design bearing capacity. This ensured that the old pier remained stable, even as the bulkhead system was being replaced and the site prepared for future upgrades.

Overcoming Challenges with Expertise and Equipment

Throughout the project, Reagan Marine faced numerous challenges, from tight time constraints to difficult soil conditions. However, the reliability of ICE® equipment, especially the ICE® 22, played a crucial role in overcoming these obstacles. The ICE® Model 55 Wood Jaw Clamp effectively transmitted vibratory forces, ensuring the efficient removal of the old concrete piles and saving valuable time.

By relying on the dependable performance of ICE® equipment, Reagan Marine was able to keep the project moving forward, maintaining a high level of productivity despite difficult circumstances. This is a testament to the trust that Reagan Marine has in the ICE® brand, and it highlights the importance of using reliable, high-performance tools in projects that require precision and efficiency.

A Step Toward the Future

This bulkhead replacement project is more than just a construction effort; it’s a crucial step in ensuring that the Newport military installation remains a strategic asset for years to come. The improvements being made to the infrastructure will provide the flexibility needed to accommodate future military operations and research activities. With a new bulkhead and pier in place, the foundation is set for continued growth and development.

The success of this project is a reflection of the dedication, expertise, and collaboration of everyone involved. Reagan Marine’s years of experience, paired with the reliability of ICE® equipment and the performance of Hydrauli-Flex hoses, helped turn a challenging project into a triumph of modern engineering. As Reagan Marine continues to trust ICE® for their pile-driving equipment, parts, and service, we at The Hose Company are proud to be a part of this ongoing success story.
