Celebrating Innovation at Harker's Island: A Historic Bridge Project with Balfour Beatty

A few years ago, we at Hydrauli-Flex had the privilege of witnessing a remarkable transformation on Harker's Island, located in Beaufort, NC. The project aimed to replace the Earl C. Davis Memorial Bridge (Bridge No. 73) and Bridge No. 96, vital links connecting the mainland to this scenic coastal haven. As we reflect on this groundbreaking endeavor, we want to highlight the innovative use of carbon fiber reinforced concrete and the exceptional performance of ICE® equipment that made it all possible.

A New Era in Construction: Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete

The highlight of this project is undoubtedly the pioneering use of carbon fiber reinforced concrete—a composite material that combines carbon fiber fabrics or bars with fine-grained concrete. This innovative approach enables architects and engineers to create varied shapes while significantly enhancing load-bearing capacity. The bridges on Harker's Island will be the first in North Carolina to feature carbon fibers in their concrete foundations, a significant milestone that underscores the region's commitment to modern, sustainable construction practices.

The Vital Role of Balfour Beatty

The N.C. Department of Transportation entrusted Balfour Beatty with the responsibility of overseeing this crucial project. With bridges over 50 years old requiring replacement, Balfour Beatty stepped up to the challenge by employing cutting-edge techniques that protect the rich history, traditions, and culture of Down East.

Using the International Construction Equipment ICE® 44B and 66C equipment, Balfour Beatty effectively installed trestles and the mega template for the new bridge. To drive the 36-inch concrete pilings, they added a new ICE® I-62 Diesel Impact Hammer to their arsenal. This powerful equipment was expertly run on the first setting with a 12-inch cushion, ensuring the 110 ft concrete piles were not overstressed—a testament to the skill and expertise of the Balfour Beatty team in technical driving in North Carolina.

Proud Partners in Innovation

At Hydrauli-Flex, we are incredibly grateful that Balfour Beatty chose to utilize ICE® equipment for this landmark project. Our confidence in the capabilities of ICE® hammers stems from our own experiences, and we are thrilled to have played a role in such an innovative initiative. It is an honor to partner with industry leaders who are not only committed to excellence but are also pushing the boundaries of what's possible in construction.

A Legacy Preserved

As the new bridges take shape, we’re excited to share that one-half of the historic Earl C. Davis Memorial Bridge will be preserved. This will allow anglers, tourists, and locals to continue enjoying the beautiful views overlooking the North River, ensuring that the area's history and charm remain intact.

Congratulations to Balfour Beatty

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Balfour Beatty for leading the way in this historical innovation. Their dedication to excellence and commitment to advancing construction technology is truly inspiring. The Harker's Island project not only represents a leap forward in engineering but also stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and respect for the environment and heritage.

As we continue to manufacture high-quality hydraulic hoses for ICE equipment, we look forward to more opportunities to support groundbreaking projects like this one. Here’s to many more innovations and firsts in the years to come!
