Enhancing Vibratory Hammer Performance with Reliable Hydraulics: A Successful Collaboration at Harvard University
At The Hose Company, we take pride in being a trusted partner for industries that rely on heavy-duty equipment to get the job done right. A perfect example of our dedication to quality and innovation came through our collaboration with ICE® (International Construction Equipment, Inc.) and Allied Pile Driving on a recent project at Harvard University. The project involved the installation of a temporary earth-retaining system for a new laboratory building on campus, using ICE® 44 Variable Moment Vibratory Hammers. These powerful machines were responsible for driving thousands of AZ-36-700 sheet piles, each a massive 45 feet long, into the ground.
While this project was an incredible opportunity to help enhance Harvard’s academic infrastructure, it came with its own set of challenges. One of the most significant concerns was the potential impact of vibrations on the nearby 200-foot-cubed cooling building. Below the campus sidewalks, a network of pipes delivered cooling to the entire Harvard campus, including dorms, classrooms, and even the precious artifacts housed in the university’s museums and galleries. Any disturbance to these pipes could disrupt cooling and affect both comfort levels for students and staff as well as the preservation of valuable collections.
Enter Allied Pile Driving, a company with extensive experience in the field. With expert guidance from the ICE® Northeast sales team, the solution was found in a trench. The team dug a trench 24 inches wide and 18 inches deep between the pile driving site and the road, resulting in an impressive 80% reduction in vibrations. This innovative solution ensured that the underground pipes and cooling system remained unaffected, allowing the project to continue smoothly.
At The Hose Company, we understand that reliable hydraulic hoses play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of such complex operations. Hydraulic systems power everything from vibratory hammers to drills and other equipment, and the performance of those systems relies heavily on the hoses that connect them. Our Hydrauli-Flex hoses are engineered to withstand the demands of high-pressure, high-performance applications like those found in the construction industry.
For equipment like the ICE® Vibratory Hammers used in this project, reliable hoses are essential. These hammers depend on our Hydrauli-Flex hoses to maintain the necessary power and efficiency needed to drive sheet piles into the ground with precision. Our hoses help keep the hydraulic systems functioning at peak performance, even in challenging environments where durability and resilience are critical. With The Hose Company’s commitment to quality, contractors can trust that their equipment will perform at its best—whether working on a construction site close to sensitive infrastructure, or in any other high-stakes project.
This collaboration between ICE® and The Hose Company is a testament to the power of partnerships. By combining innovative construction techniques with the best in hydraulic hose technology, we can help clients like Allied Pile Driving tackle challenges head-on. The success of this project not only enhanced the campus facilities at Harvard but also ensured that future generations of researchers can continue to make groundbreaking contributions in their fields.
At The Hose Company, we are proud to support the construction industry and beyond with our premium hydraulic hoses, helping to power the equipment that powers progress.
