Improving Port Efficiency with ICE® Equipment: A Success Story Powered by Hydrauli-Flex Hoses
At The Hose Company, we take pride in providing the robust and flexible Hydrauli-Flex hoses that keep critical infrastructure projects running smoothly, even in the most demanding environments. One such success story comes from the recent work done at the Dundalk Marine Terminal, the largest and one of the busiest cargo facilities at the Port of Baltimore. This terminal plays a pivotal role in moving goods through the nation’s supply chain, and it faced significant challenges related to outdated infrastructure and heavy traffic congestion.
The Dundalk Marine Terminal is an essential part of the Port of Baltimore, which handles one of the highest volumes of cargo in the United States. Semi-trailer truck drivers often faced long waits—sometimes up to eight hours—due to the sheer volume of containers being unloaded from ships. These delays not only slowed operations but also led to dangerous traffic conditions, particularly on Broening Highway, which crosses over Colgate Creek. The bridge on this highway was outdated, posing a risk to both traffic and public safety. The decision was made by the Baltimore City Department of Transportation (BCDOT), Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), and the Maryland Port Administration (MPA) to replace the old bridge with a new four-lane structure.
The team at Allan Myers Construction was tasked with replacing the outdated bridge, and the project required the precision of ICE®'s powerful equipment. ICE®’s vibratory and diesel impact hammers, such as the ICE® 44E Vibratory Driver/Extractor, ICE® I-80, and ICE® I-125 Diesel Impact Hammers, were selected to handle the critical task of driving the caissons needed for the new bridge foundation. The team began by demolishing one side of the old bridge, then used the ICE® 44E to pre-set the 46" diameter caissons before switching to the diesel impact hammers based on soil conditions.
However, even the most powerful machinery is only as reliable as the components that power them. That’s where The Hose Company comes in. Our Hydrauli-Flex hoses are engineered to perform under high pressures and in harsh environments, providing the necessary reliability to ensure ICE® equipment works at its peak performance. The high-quality hydraulic hoses we supply are essential for the efficient operation of these vibratory hammers and drills, which require consistent, powerful hydraulic pressure to drive through the toughest soils and materials. Without the reliability of these hoses, maintaining ICE® equipment’s performance under demanding conditions would be a challenge.
By supplying Hydrauli-Flex hoses, we contribute to the seamless operation of ICE® equipment, ensuring the success of projects like this bridge replacement at the Port of Baltimore. When projects are completed efficiently, such as this one, not only does it help boost safety and performance, but it also plays a vital role in managing global supply chain challenges. The new bridge is expected to improve truck access to I-95, reducing delays, minimizing traffic risks, and helping to ensure a smooth flow of goods through the Port.
We would like to thank Allan Myers Construction for trusting ICE®’s vibratory and diesel impact equipment to carry out this essential project. With Hydrauli-Flex hoses powering the equipment, the project is set to be completed on schedule in Spring 2024, helping to improve the efficiency of the Port of Baltimore for years to come.
