The NJ Transit Microgrid Project: A New Era in Clean Energy
NJ Transit’s ambitious microgrid project aims to provide 66 miles of clean energy to the iconic Amtrak service. This initiative not only enhances energy reliability but also positions NJ Transit as a leader in renewable energy integration. With a total investment of $546 million—largely funded by federal support—this project represents a significant step towards a sustainable transportation future.
The microgrid will consist of new substations in Kearny and Hoboken, a two-megawatt gas-powered generator in Jersey City, and vital electrical connections linking power plants to railways. In response to the lessons learned from Hurricane Sandy, the project prioritizes resilience, ensuring that the system can withstand future weather challenges.
Engineering Excellence with ICE® Equipment
Central to the project is the role of American Pile & Foundation, tasked with installing the robust foundation for power lines connecting transit lines to the new microgrid. Utilizing the ICE® Model 110C Vibratory Driver/Extractor, our hydraulic hoses help facilitate the installation of 13-foot diameter steel caissons that form the backbone of the new infrastructure.
These caissons not only support the electrical lines but also employ innovative splicing methods in conjunction with the vibratory hammer, ensuring enhanced stability and longevity. By reinforcing these structures with rebar and concrete, we create a foundation designed to endure the most severe weather conditions.
