Revitalizing the Ohio River: The Role of Hydrauli-Flex Hoses in Rebuilding Marine Structures
At The Hose Company, we take great pride in our contribution to projects that help rejuvenate vital infrastructure. One such project took place on the Ohio River, where decaying dolphins, essential man-made marine structures, were replaced to improve river transportation and ensure efficient cargo movement. Thanks to the expert work of The Foertsch Group, in partnership with ICE® and our Hydrauli-Flex hoses, the region’s marine foundation structures have received a much-needed upgrade.
What Are Dolphins in the Marine Construction World?
In marine construction, dolphins are independent, man-made structures built in the water, primarily used to secure barges. These essential platforms support the loading and unloading of cargo while allowing for the seamless movement of goods along rivers and into harbors. Over time, the condition of these dolphins can deteriorate, causing instability and posing risks to shipping operations. Therefore, regular upkeep and replacement are necessary to maintain their functionality.
The Challenge: Overcoming Ohio River Clay
The Ohio River, a key waterway for commerce, was in need of an upgrade to its dolphin structures. However, the clay-rich soils in the river presented a challenge when it came time to install new steel piles. The dense, elastic clays were difficult to penetrate, and a more powerful solution was required to drive the piles deep enough to create a stable foundation.
That’s where ICE® and The Foertsch Group came in. ICE® recommended using the ICE® 50B Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractor, which features the capacity to apply a significant amount of force. To further improve its efficiency in this tough riverbed, ICE® also advised the use of a set of bias weights. This innovative combination allowed The Foertsch Group to effortlessly push through the stubborn clay and install new dolphins with ease.
The Foertsch Group’s Expertise at Work
The Foertsch Group has been an instrumental player in marine foundation work, known for their expertise and skill in executing these kinds of challenging projects. Their work in the Ohio River demonstrates how the right equipment, in the right hands, can make all the difference. The partnership between The Foertsch Group and ICE® has been nothing short of transformative.
When asked about their experience with the project, The Foertsch Group was clear: “When it comes to driving through Ohio River clay, the ICE® 50B is the only way to go!”
The advanced engineering of the ICE® 50B, combined with the proper hydraulic support, ensured that the installation of these new pile-driven dolphins would be efficient and long-lasting. The Foertsch Group’s confidence in ICE® equipment, and specifically in its ability to overcome the challenges posed by the river’s soils, speaks volumes about the effectiveness of this combination.
Hydrauli-Flex Hoses: The Unsung Heroes of Marine Construction Equipment
The success of these projects wouldn’t have been possible without the reliable hydraulic hoses from The Hose Company. Our Hydrauli-Flex hoses are designed to provide the necessary support for equipment like the ICE® 50B Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractor. These hoses ensure the seamless operation of the hydraulic systems that power vibratory hammers and drills, making them an indispensable part of the construction process.
The Hose Company understands the importance of durable, high-performance hoses that can withstand the demanding environments in which they’re used. In partnership with ICE®, we ensure that our hoses provide the highest level of reliability, efficiency, and safety, helping heavy equipment perform at its best, even in the most challenging conditions like the riverbed clay of the Ohio River.
A Partnership Built on Quality and Innovation
Our collaboration with ICE® showcases the vital role hydraulic hoses play in the functionality of construction machinery. As the demand for stronger, more resilient marine structures grows, so does the need for equipment that can withstand tough conditions. We at The Hose Company are committed to providing the highest quality hoses, ensuring that equipment like ICE®’s pile drivers can perform seamlessly and reliably.
As the project continues to evolve and Ohio River dolphins are rebuilt, we look forward to further collaborations and continuing our role in supporting the construction and revitalization of the region’s infrastructure.
