Bridging the Gap: Hydrauli-Flex’s Role in the Racine Street Bridge Reconstruction

At Hydrauli-Flex, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of hydraulic solutions. Our products power the machinery that shapes our infrastructure, and one of the most exciting projects we’ve been part of recently is the reconstruction of the Racine Street Bridge in Menasha, Wisconsin. This pivotal project not only enhances transportation for vehicles but also improves accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, ensuring a vital connection for the community.

The Importance of the Racine Street Bridge

Originally constructed in 1952, the Racine Street Bridge is more than just a crossing; it’s a critical link between Doty Island and Menasha’s central business district. With approximately 10,000 vehicles crossing daily, along with countless pedestrians and cyclists, its aging structure was nearing the end of its 70-year service life. The reconstruction aims to introduce a modern two-lane drawbridge, wider lanes, new roundabouts, and increased vertical clearance for marine traffic, transforming the way people move through this area.

Overcoming Challenges

Wisconsin-based Lunda Construction Company, with a history dating back to 1938, took on the monumental task of overseeing this project. Early in the construction phase, the team encountered significant challenges with an Atlas Copco rotary head powered by a third-party power unit. Unfortunately, the underpowered unit caused restrictions that impeded the drilling process.

When Lunda Construction faced these equipment malfunctions, they turned to the ICE® mid-west service team, who swiftly provided solutions. This collaboration led to the decision to purchase the ICE® Hydraulic Drill: Model HS-50, paired with a 230H Power Unit, a game-changer for the project.

The Power of ICE® Equipment

The ICE® HS-50 is engineered for efficiency and precision, equipped to run a DTH (down-the-hole hammer) that utilizes compressed air to deliver impact power directly into the drilling process. This innovative technology ensures that the drill can effectively engage with challenging rock formations, making it an essential component for the Racine Street Bridge project.

To maximize performance and minimize shock to the drill head, the HS-50 was also fitted with the recommended ballast weight. This careful engineering choice was crucial, allowing the drill to maintain engagement with the rock while minimizing wear and tear on the equipment.

The Role of Hydrauli-Flex Hoses

Central to the operation of the International construction Equipment ICE® equipment are the hydraulic hoses manufactured by Hydrauli-Flex. Our hoses are designed to withstand the rigors of heavy-duty construction while delivering high performance under pressure. In the case of the Racine Street Bridge, the hydraulic hoses played a vital role in powering the ICE® Hydraulic Drill, ensuring that the equipment could perform optimally even in the toughest conditions.

Hydrauli-Flex hoses are crafted with durability and reliability in mind. They are tested to meet rigorous industry standards, ensuring that our partners can count on them to keep their equipment running smoothly.

A Successful Partnership

As construction progressed, Hydrauli-Flex was proud to support Lunda Construction and ICE® in delivering an outstanding solution to this critical infrastructure project. The collaboration showcased the importance of teamwork, innovative engineering, and quality materials in overcoming challenges and achieving success.

As of June 2022, the construction of the Racine Street Bridge was in its second stage, continuing to make strides toward completion. We celebrate the efforts of all involved and look forward to seeing the positive impact this bridge will have on the Menasha community.

At Hydrauli-Flex, we’re committed to powering progress. The Racine Street Bridge reconstruction is just one example of how our hydraulic solutions contribute to building a better future. We look forward to more projects that strengthen communities and enhance infrastructure, ensuring connectivity for generations to come.
