Building a Sustainable Future: The Jefferson Hood Stormwater Interceptor Project in Downtown Tacoma

At Hydrauli-Flex, we take pride in being the go-to manufacturer of hydraulic hoses used in all ICE® equipment, supporting innovative projects like the Jefferson Hood Stormwater Interceptor in downtown Tacoma, Washington. This initiative is not just about infrastructure; it’s about creating a sustainable future for the city and its residents.

Tackling Stormwater Challenges

Downtown Tacoma is on a mission to enhance its stormwater management capabilities, aiming to reduce flooding and improve surface water conveyance. The newly designed 72-inch diameter stormwater pipeline will channel runoff into a newly constructed outfall at the Thea Foss Waterway, addressing the city's growing needs as it continues to develop.

James W. Fowler, a respected construction firm based in Oregon, spearheaded this vital project. The journey began in October 2021, with the design phase wrapping up and construction set to commence shortly after. However, the project faced unexpected challenges when the Antaeus 320, affectionately dubbed “Apex,” struggled with sheet pile installation. This delay necessitated a pause in construction, but Fowler's team was quick to adapt.

Overcoming Obstacles with ICE® Technology

When issues arose with the Antaeus 320 vibratory hammer, the team at James W. Fowler knew they needed a reliable solution. They reached out to Mike Clark of ICE®, a veteran in the piling industry in the Greater Seattle area, who quickly assessed the situation and recommended the ICE® Model 44B.

The ICE® Model 44B is a proven workhorse known for its versatility and performance. With a moment of 4,400 inch-pounds, it outshines the Antaeus 320, which only offers 3,200 inch-pounds, all while being in the same weight class. This upgrade allowed Fowler’s team to make up for lost time and continue construction without further delays.

A Robust Alternative: ICE® 33

In addition to the Model 44B, it’s worth noting that the ICE® Model 33 would also have been an excellent option for this project, outperforming both the Antaeus 320 and the HPSI 300. This model fits into a unique category alongside the APE 200, showcasing the extensive range of ICE® equipment available to meet various project needs.

Innovation for Urban Construction

Recognizing the unique challenges of operating within the confines of downtown Tacoma, ICE® also collaborated with James W. Fowler to create a specialized vibratory hammer stand. This innovation allows for the upright placement of the pile driver, minimizing space usage and streamlining daily operations in a city with limited laydown areas.

Looking Ahead

As we move toward the project’s completion in fall 2022, Hydrauli-Flex remains committed to supporting our customers with top-quality hydraulic hoses for manufacturers like ICE® and their equipment. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with James W. Fowler on this significant project and look forward to witnessing the positive impact of the Jefferson Hood Stormwater Interceptor on Tacoma’s future.

At Hydrauli-Flex, we believe that every project contributes to a more sustainable world, and we’re proud to play our part in making it happen. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting project progresses!
