Building on Ice: How Prince Marine Construction Utilized the ICE® Model 2 for a New Dock on Upper Prior Lake

At Hydrauli-Flex, we take pride in supporting innovative construction projects that push the limits of our equipment. One recent endeavor that exemplifies this spirit was the work done by Prince Marine Construction (PMC) on Upper Prior Lake in Prior Lake, MN. As winter set in and the lake began to freeze, PMC faced the unique challenge of constructing a dock on a solid sheet of ice. Let’s dive into how they made it happen safely and efficiently!

The Challenge of Frozen Lakes

After weeks of freezing temperatures, a formidable layer of ice formed over Upper Prior Lake. While this may seem like a wintry wonderland, it poses specific safety considerations for construction. Ice thickness is crucial: while four inches can typically support up to 200 pounds, thicker ice is necessary for heavier loads. This means careful planning and execution are vital when working on a frozen surface.

PMC approached this project with safety at the forefront. They began by drilling 18-inch diameter holes through the ice, creating a stable foundation for their work. This preparation was essential not only for the integrity of the dock but also for the safety of the crew.

The Right Equipment for the Job

To tackle the installation of pipe piles measuring 6-8 inches in diameter and 20-30 feet in length, PMC relied on the ICE® Model 2 Vibratory Driver. This compact yet powerful machine is designed for optimal pile amplitude and boasts remote capabilities—key features that ensured a safe working environment while driving piles directly through the ice.

One of the standout aspects of the ICE® Model 2 is its efficiency. Each piling installation took only 1-2 minutes, allowing the crew to stay on schedule and keep labor costs down. PMC’s experience with the ICE® Model 2 on previous projects provided confidence that this lightweight hammer would perform reliably, even in challenging conditions.

A Successful Outcome

With the dock now complete, families can look forward to summer days filled with fishing, skiing, and enjoying the great outdoors on Upper Prior Lake. The successful collaboration between Hydrauli-Flex, Prince Marine Construction, and International Construction Equipment, Inc. exemplifies how the right tools and expertise can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.

At Hydrauli-Flex, we’re grateful for the opportunity to support PMC with our high-quality hydraulic hoses and equipment. Thank you, Prince Marine Construction, for your continued partnership. Together, we’re making waves—no ice can hold us back!

As you venture out onto the newly constructed dock this summer, remember that safety and innovation go hand in hand. Here’s to more successful projects ahead, no matter the conditions!
