Building Strong Foundations: The Role of Hydrauli-Flex Hoses in the Renovation of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge

When it comes to major infrastructure projects, like the renovation of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, every component matters, from the laborers on site to the equipment that powers the work. As the Triborough Bridge approaches its 88th anniversary, a transformation is underway, including the widening of bike and pedestrian walkways to improve mobility across this iconic structure. But behind the scenes, the reliable machinery that helps get the job done is just as important—machinery like the vibratory hammers and drills that are powering the project.

The equipment needed for such a challenging undertaking requires specialized hydraulic components, and that’s where The Hose Company and our Hydrauli-Flex hoses come into play. These hoses are crucial in ensuring the proper functioning of ICE® (International Construction Equipment) machinery, which is being used to support the renovation of the RFK Bridge.

The RFK Bridge Renovation: A New Chapter for NYC

The RFK Bridge, formerly known as the Triborough Bridge, connects Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx across the Harlem River, serving as a vital artery for commuters. As part of the MTA’s Bike, Pedestrian, and Micro Mobility Strategic Action Plan, the renovation project aims to improve bicycle and pedestrian access across New York City’s transportation system—specifically at subway and commuter rail stations, bus stops, and bridges, including the RFK Bridge. This ambitious plan is set to be completed by 2027, making it more accessible and safer for all New Yorkers.

In late 2023, Underpinning & Foundation Skanska, a leader in deep foundations contracting in NYC since 1897, took on the monumental task of remodeling the RFK Bridge. Their experience spans several iconic projects, including the restoration of the World Trade Center and the construction of the United Nations Headquarters. For this project, the team was tasked with ensuring that the foundation of the bridge could support the demands of future renovations, including setting massive 16ft pipe piles deep into the earth below the bridge.

The Hydraulic Machinery Behind the Renovation

In a project this large and complex, precision and power are required. The ICE® IP-5 Hydraulic Hammer is a key piece of machinery used in the project to proof the deep piles supporting the bridge. Because of the low headroom beneath the bridge, around 50 feet, the crew faces tight conditions, making the work even more challenging. Despite this, Underpinning & Foundation Skanska has continued to push forward with the utmost efficiency and safety.

At the heart of this machinery relies on hydraulic pressure, which is critical for the performance of these tools. For ICE® Vibratory Hammers and Drills, maintaining consistent hydraulic pressure is essential to ensure optimal results. That’s where Hydrauli-Flex Hoses come in.

The Essential Role of Hydrauli-Flex Hoses

The hydraulic hoses used in ICE® equipment must stand up to the toughest conditions and deliver consistent performance under extreme pressure. The Hydrauli-Flex hoses from The Hose Company are designed to meet these exacting demands. They are specifically crafted to maintain the necessary hydraulic pressure, ensuring ICE® machinery functions seamlessly throughout every phase of this high-profile renovation project.

Hydrauli-Flex hoses are built to be durable, flexible, and resistant to wear and tear. This reliability is crucial for projects like the RFK Bridge renovation, where equipment must perform flawlessly, no matter the job site conditions. Whether it’s working under low headroom or tackling tough, variable soil conditions, our hoses keep the machinery operating at peak efficiency, minimizing downtime and maximizing safety.

A Legacy of Excellence

We’re proud to support Underpinning & Foundation Skanska and their work on this historic project. As Frank Sinatra famously said, "If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere!" The RFK Bridge has been a vital part of New York City for nearly 90 years, and as renovations continue, it will remain an essential link between the city’s boroughs for generations to come.

The success of this project is not just about big machines and heavy equipment—it’s about the strength of the components that allow everything to work together smoothly, safely, and efficiently. At The Hose Company, we’re honored to be a part of that equation, helping to power the machinery that’s rebuilding this iconic bridge.
