A Century of History at the Perth Amboy Refinery
The Perth Amboy Refinery has been an integral part of the American oil and gas landscape since its construction in 1920 by the Barber Asphalt Company. Located between Convery Boulevard and State Street in Perth Amboy, NJ, the refinery has seen over 100 years of industrial history. In 1945, Chevron Corporation purchased the plant, transitioning it to a more diversified operation that included the production of gasoline and heating oil. Over the next several decades, Chevron expanded the refinery, increasing its capacity to 80,000 barrels by 2008.
In 2008, Chevron sold its operations to Buckeye Partners, the current owner of the facility. Today, Buckeye continues to operate the refinery, producing a variety of petroleum products that play a vital role in fueling global industries.
Dock Repairs by K-T Marine, Inc.
To maintain the safety and stability of their operations, Buckeye Partners recently undertook extensive dock repairs at the refinery. The project was completed by K-T Marine, Inc., a company with over 40 years of experience in large-scale marine construction and maintenance. K-T Marine specializes in dock building for terminals, marinas, and waterfront properties across New Jersey, New York, and eastern Pennsylvania.
For this dock repair, K-T Marine partnered with International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) to use the ICE® 44VM Variable Moment Hammer. This hammer, known for its precision and reduced vibration capabilities, was the ideal tool for this sensitive work environment. The 44VM model features a 4,070-pound (about 1846.12 kg) non-vibrating weight, which minimizes vibrations as piles are driven into the bedrock. Given the proximity to sensitive dock features and the surrounding environment, the ICE® 44VM was a smart choice.
Thanks to this combination of expertise and equipment, the project was completed successfully, passing all vibration tests and ensuring a secure, long-lasting dock structure. The dock repairs will continue to support Buckeye Partners’ safe and efficient operations for years to come.
