Hydrauli-Flex Powered the Raritan River Bridge Replacement
At The Hose Company, we take immense pride in having been a part of critical infrastructure projects that shaped the future. Our Hydrauli-Flex hoses, trusted components in heavy-duty equipment, played a vital role in the successful completion of one of New Jersey’s most ambitious undertakings—the Raritan River Bridge Replacement.
For over 115 years, the original Raritan River Bridge carried trains on the New Jersey Coast Line, connecting communities and business hubs like Newark, Jersey City, and Manhattan. However, the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in 2012 damaged the bridge significantly, prompting strict speed restrictions that delayed commuters and underscored the need for a replacement. Now completed, the new bridge stands as a resilient and modern infrastructure marvel.
The Role of Hydrauli-Flex in ICE Equipment.
The project’s first phase, led by George Harms Construction Co., involved laying the foundation for the higher-elevated bridge designed to withstand extreme weather and improve marine navigation. This phase utilized advanced equipment, including ICE® 200C and ICE® 33B Vibratory Hammers from International Construction Equipment, Inc., which relied on our Hydrauli-Flex hoses to deliver peak hydraulic performance in demanding conditions.
ICE® 200C Vibratory Hammer: Used to drive 102-inch diameter caissons up to 140 feet long.
ICE® 33B Vibratory Hammer: Ensured precise placement of smaller pipe piles.
ICE® 7E Excavator-Mounted Driver/Extractor: Paired with a Gooseneck extension, allowing the crew to efficiently drive longer piles with greater reach.
Hydrauli-Flex hoses, known for their durability and reliability, excelled in the challenging environment, withstanding extreme conditions, and harsh conditions throughout the project.
Achieving Construction Milestones
The scale of this project was monumental, and Hydrauli-Flex hoses were there every step of the way:
84 drilled shafts reaching depths of up to 225 feet.
Over 3,500 cubic yards of concrete per pier.
Nearly 2.5 million pounds of rebar reinforcing critical structures.
Temporary trestles providing essential access to work zones.
By the project’s completion, the new Raritan River Bridge had transformed into a modern, resilient structure, generating an estimated $1 billion in economic impact and supporting 5,740 jobs.
