Revitalizing New Orleans: The Canal Street Ferry Terminal Project

As the proud manufacturer of hydraulic hoses that power the ICE Equipment and Vibratory Hammers, we at Hydrauli-Flex are thrilled to witness the incredible transformation of the Canal Street Ferry Terminal in New Orleans. Since the first regular ferry service launched between Algiers and Canal Street in 1827, this vital transportation hub has evolved significantly, and we’re excited to play a role in its latest chapter.

A Brief History

New Orleans has long been a city of movement and transition, with its ferry system offering dependable passage across the mighty Mississippi River. The Canal Street Ferry Terminal has seen countless changes, from the construction of the Greater New Orleans Bridge in 1952 to its current status as one of the most frequented ferry systems in the United States. With ongoing improvements and maintenance, the state transportation boards are dedicated to ensuring this system meets the needs of its riders. However, any disruption to the ferry service could have catastrophic effects on the entire transportation ecosystem in New Orleans.

The Canal Street Terminal Revitalization

Enter APC Construction Company, the powerhouse behind the historic three-phase project to modernize the Canal Street Ferry Terminal. This ambitious $43 million initiative is not just about aesthetics; it aims to enhance accessibility and passenger experience. The project began with the demolition of the old terminal, paving the way for a state-of-the-art, ADA-compliant facility that connects visitors to the vibrant riverfront, Spanish Plaza, and Audubon Aquarium.

A crucial element of this project has been the utilization of the ICE® 50B Vibratory Driver/Extractor, paired with the ICE® tier four 580T Power Unit. Initially, the plan involved using the larger ICE® 110 Vibratory Driver to drive the piles for the new terminal. However, the team quickly realized that the ICE® 50B was more than capable of handling the task on its own, efficiently driving 16” and 42” caissons to grade.

Efficiency Meets Innovation

At Hydrauli-Flex, we pride ourselves on delivering products that exceed industry standards, and the performance of the ICE® 50B is a testament to this commitment. Its power and efficiency have proven invaluable in this massive construction endeavor, allowing for streamlined operations and minimizing downtime. This is a perfect example of how quality hydraulic hoses and reliable machinery can transform the construction landscape.

Looking Ahead

Set to be completed in the summer of 2022, the revitalized Canal Street Ferry Terminal will serve as a beacon of modern transportation, reflecting New Orleans' rich history while embracing the future. The new design focuses on the passenger experience, prioritizing accessibility and integrating public transportation services.

As we celebrate the achievements of APC Construction Company in this revitalization project, we are proud to be part of a movement that enhances transportation in New Orleans. The new terminal will not only improve access but also serve as a gateway to the city’s cultural treasures, reinforcing the importance of the ferry system in the broader context of New Orleans’ transportation ecosystem.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this monumental project! We at Hydrauli-Flex look forward to seeing the positive impact this transformation will have on the community and its visitors for years to come.
