Supporting Miramar’s Growth with Reliable Hydraulic Solutions for ICE Equipment

Introduction: Miramar’s Rapid Growth

The small town of Miramar, Florida, has transformed significantly over the past few decades. Since 2000, it has experienced a growth rate that outpaces 91% of similarly sized cities in the United States. With an increase in population of 81.1%, Miramar is now the 209th largest city in the nation. This rapid expansion has prompted the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to take action with an extensive makeover of the region's roadways and infrastructure. Between 2022 and 2027, twenty separate projects will be underway, including the addition of new lanes on the Turnpike, buffered bike lanes, sidewalks, and improved lighting. The aim is to create a safer and more accessible environment for pedestrians and vehicles alike, boosting both safety and urban quality of life in Miramar.

The Role of Magnum Construction Management (MCM)

Magnum Construction Management (MCM), a family-owned construction company based in Miami, is a vital player in the ongoing improvements in Miramar. MCM is overseeing a critical project along University Drive, focusing on improving mobility between the northern and southern city limits. One key component of this project is the construction of a new pedestrian overpass bridge near Miramar Boulevard. The bridge will span over a canal, which is managed by the local drainage district, and the project also includes the construction of a panel wall using 18” square concrete piles, each 40 feet long.

ICE® Equipment Powers the Project

As a manufacturer of high-quality hydraulic hoses for powering various construction equipment, The Hose Company takes great pride in the vital role its products play in these large-scale construction projects. For this project, MCM needed reliable equipment that could handle the tough demands of pile driving. The solution came from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®), which provided an array of machines designed to perform efficiently and safely.

The ICE® 28 Vibratory Driver/Extractor was used to set up the pile-driving process. It was equipped with an ICE® 140C Sheeting Clamp to prop up the piles and ensure precise placement. To prepare for the pile installation, an ICE® EX-25 Hydraulic Rotary Head, combined with 24-inch flighting mounted on 26-inch swinging leads, was used to predrill the installation holes. The swinging leads, which are lightweight and affordable, were particularly helpful for maintaining the crane's alignment and driving piles at a vertical angle while avoiding any contact with the canal below.

The final step in the pile installation process was carried out by an ICE® I-12 Diesel Impact Hammer, featuring a 24-inch drive cap. This drive cap protected both the hammer and the pile from damage by absorbing the impact stress during each blow, ensuring that the piles were securely driven into the ground without compromising equipment integrity.
