Powering Precision and Efficiency: The Hose Company's Contribution to the ICE® Equipment at La Cala Project

In 2024, the legacy of Hurricane Fiona and its impact on Puerto Rico's infrastructure served as a reminder of the importance of resilient construction practices. A crucial part of the efforts to rebuild and reinforce the island's foundations, particularly in areas vulnerable to liquefaction, involved innovative technologies and high-quality equipment. As a manufacturer of Hydrauli-Flex hoses, The Hose Company had the privilege of supporting these vital construction projects by providing the reliable hydraulic solutions that powered the ICE® equipment used in the process.

The Challenges of Puerto Rico's Weak Soil and the La Cala Project

The 2022 hurricane season saw Hurricane Fiona, a Category 1 storm, deliver devastating rainfall to Puerto Rico. This storm’s flooding exacerbated the already fragile conditions created by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Buildings, which had been slowly sinking due to the effects of liquefaction, were further compromised. Liquefaction occurs when water-saturated soil loses its strength during shaking, leading to severe foundation issues.

The La Cala residential complex in Dorado, Puerto Rico, designed for the world-renowned Ritz-Carlton Reserve, needed to be built on soil that could resist future liquefaction. This required the use of cutting-edge ground improvement technologies and deep foundation systems to ensure that the luxurious neighborhood of 16 homes, each valued at $35 million, was built on a solid, resilient foundation.

MRD LLC’s Groundbreaking Solution for Foundation Reinforcement

MRD LLC, a Puerto Rican contractor specializing in soil reinforcement and ground improvement, took on the formidable task of preparing the foundation for La Cala. The project called for a combination of stone columns and specialized foundation techniques to mitigate liquefaction risks and strengthen the area. The key to the success of this project lay in the expert use of advanced construction equipment, such as the ICE® Excavator-Mounted Vibratory Hammers and the ICE® EX-25 Rotary Head.

The MRD team began the process by using the ICE® EX-25 Rotary Head to pre-drill the soils to the necessary depth, effectively preparing the site for foundation work. Following the pre-drilling phase, the ICE® 12E Excavator-Mounted Vibratory Hammer was deployed to compact gravel into the ground, further enhancing the foundation’s stability.

To complete the installation, the team used two of the largest models in the ICE® Excavator-Mounted series, the ICE® 12E Vibratory Hammers, to drive 18-inch impact piers into the ground. This critical step ensured that the foundation would be solid, preventing future sinking or instability.

Hydrauli-Flex Hoses: The Unsung Heroes of Hydraulic Power

Behind every piece of heavy construction equipment used in this project were the Hydrauli-Flex hoses that powered the machinery. The ICE® equipment, known for its precision and efficiency, relied on these high-quality hydraulic hoses to ensure smooth operation under demanding conditions.

Hydraulic hoses are essential in construction projects, particularly those involving high vibrations and movement. These hoses must be durable, flexible, and able to withstand harsh environments, all while ensuring the smooth transfer of pressurized fluids to power various components of the machinery. At The Hose Company, our Hydrauli-Flex hoses are designed to meet these demands, offering both performance and longevity even under extreme pressures and challenging environments.

In the case of the La Cala project, our hoses played a pivotal role in powering the ICE® equipment, allowing the MRD crew to complete their foundation work quickly and efficiently. The durability and strength of the Hydrauli-Flex hoses ensured that the machinery operated seamlessly, delivering impressive results that exceeded expectations.

ICE® Equipment’s Impact on the La Cala Project

The ICE® equipment provided MRD LLC with the efficiency and performance needed to meet the demanding requirements of the La Cala foundation work. With the powerful ICE® 12E Excavator-Mounted Vibratory Hammers and the ICE® EX-25 Rotary Head, the MRD team saw substantial improvements in installation times compared to standard equipment. The contractor's satisfaction with the performance of the machinery and its hydraulic systems was evident, as the crew expressed that the ICE® 12E Vibratory Hammer, in particular, proved to be highly energy-efficient, helping streamline the compaction and construction process.

The improved efficiency and reduced time on-site not only helped the project stay on track but also enhanced the overall quality of the work being done. The seamless operation of ICE® equipment, fueled by Hydrauli-Flex hoses, allowed MRD to complete the deep foundation tasks more efficiently, reinforcing the La Cala development’s foundation and ensuring its resilience for the future.
