The Hose Company: Powering Essential Construction with Hydrauli-Flex Hoses at Port Bienville

At The Hose Company, we take immense pride in providing high-quality Hydrauli-Flex Hoses, renowned for their flexibility, durability, and reliability in powering and running ICE® equipment. As a trusted partner in the construction and industrial sectors, we understand the critical importance of infrastructure projects like the construction that took place at the Port Bienville Barge Fleeting Area in Mississippi. In 2023, this project received a $502,855 grant awarded by the Mississippi Department of Transportation, marking a significant investment in enhancing the region’s maritime infrastructure. We are excited to highlight how our Hydrauli-Flex Hoses supported this vital development.

Why Barge Fleeting Areas Are Essential to Maritime Commerce

Barge fleeting areas are key components of the United States’ maritime infrastructure. These designated zones provide secure spaces for barges—both loaded and empty—to temporarily store while awaiting transport or unloading. Positioned along rivers, fleeting areas optimize barge traffic, improve port safety, and facilitate the smooth flow of goods across the waterways.

The Port Bienville Barge Fleeting Area underwent substantial upgrades in 2023, thanks to the grant from the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The expansion of the port enhanced its capacity, enabling it to accommodate more barges, reduce congestion, and streamline operations. This was an essential step in supporting the economic growth of the region.

Deep South Construction & Salvage’s Vital Role in the Project

In early 2023, Deep South Construction & Salvage, a leader in marine construction, was chosen to oversee the update of the Port Bienville Barge Fleeting Area. Known for their expertise in marine construction, Deep South was tasked with upgrading this critical facility.

The project involved installing four new mooring dolphins and removing and replacing two existing ones. Mooring dolphins are essential structures that secure barges at port, ensuring safe and reliable mooring operations. These improvements were integral in increasing the port's capacity to handle more barge traffic, making the facility more efficient and safer for maritime operations.

How ICE® Equipment Powered the Construction Process

To facilitate the installation of the mooring dolphins, Deep South Construction & Salvage rented an ICE® 44 Vibratory Driver Extractor from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). This powerful machine played a key role in driving steel piles deep into the soft soil, creating a secure foundation for the new dolphins.

The project required driving 24-inch diameter steel pipe piles with a ½-inch wall thickness, reaching depths of 100 feet. The installation included placing one plumb pile and two battered piles on 3:1 batters to ensure the foundation’s strength and stability. Additionally, the existing timber piles were replaced with longer steel piles to improve the foundation's durability in soft soil conditions.

Thanks to the precision and power of the ICE® 44, the piles were safely and efficiently driven into place, ensuring the project’s success.

The Positive Impacts of the Port Bienville Barge Fleeting Area Project

The enhancements made to the Port Bienville Barge Fleeting Area in 2023 resulted in several important benefits:

  1. Increased Barge Capacity: The installation of additional mooring dolphins enabled the port to accommodate more barges, enhancing its capacity and operational efficiency.

  2. Improved Safety: The new, stronger foundation provided a safer environment for mooring operations, reducing the risk of accidents.

  3. Optimized Traffic Flow: With more secure docking spaces, the port was able to better manage barge traffic, ensuring smoother operations and better efficiency.

  4. Economic Growth: By enhancing the port's infrastructure, the project helped support local economic development, allowing the port to handle more cargo and further serve the region’s maritime industry.

These upgrades strengthened the overall infrastructure of the Port Bienville Industrial Park, further positioning it as a key player in Mississippi’s maritime and economic landscape.

A Successful Partnership for Future Growth
