Transforming Rhode Island's Port of Davisville
One such critical project utilizing ICE® equipment is the restoration of Pier 1 at the Port of Davisville in Rhode Island. This port, an economic linchpin within the Quonset Business Park, serves as a hub for over 200 companies and nearly 13,000 jobs. Known for its support of auto shipping services and the burgeoning offshore wind industry, the Port of Davisville processes over 300,000 vehicles annually and facilitates vital operations for offshore wind energy.
As part of the $234.5 million Port of Davisville Master Plan led by the Quonset Development Corporation (QDC), Pier 1 is undergoing a monumental transformation. This restoration project is replacing deteriorating, creosote-treated timber piles with state-of-the-art concrete and steel piles, enhancing the pier’s reliability and capacity. Upon completion in June 2024, Pier 1 will boast five berths to accommodate cargo ships and offshore wind service vessels, further solidifying Davisville’s position as one of the top ten auto importers in America and a leader in offshore wind energy.
The Role of ICE® Equipment and Hydrauli-Flex Hoses
Central to this restoration effort is the expertise of J.F. Brennan Company, a Wisconsin-based contractor specializing in marine construction. To replace the outer perimeter points of Pier 1, the team is employing an ICE® 44E Vibratory Driver/Extractor equipped with a Model 140C Sheeting Clamp and a Model 140C HydroLock adapter. This innovative setup significantly enhances efficiency by streamlining pile handling. While traditional sheeting clamps require time-intensive bolting and unbolting, the HydroLock Adapter enables quick transitions between pile types, saving hours per day and reducing labor costs significantly.
Additionally, an ICE® 22D Vibratory Driver/Extractor is aiding in the removal of over 3,000 aging timber piles, some measuring up to 80 feet in length. The replacement process involves driving more than 300 steel pipe piles, each 24 inches in diameter and up to 140 feet long, into the seabed using an ICE® I-46V2 Diesel Impact Hammer. These modern steel piles are built to withstand the rigors of marine environments, ensuring decades of reliable service.
