PennDOT's $26-million makeover of the Margaret Road Interchange in Kittanning, PA, is a transformative project that underscores the importance of infrastructure modernization. The project will replace a four-way intersection with a T-intersection, while also constructing two new structures: a dual-span steel girder bridge and a concrete box culvert for a nearby tributary.
The new bridge will carry traffic from State Route 422 over to State Route 2005, commonly known as "Margaret Road." This redesign aims to improve access to attractions like Kittanning's Riverfront Park and Indiana's Jimmy Stewart Museum, while boosting safety and efficiency for motorists. Additionally, the project includes the installation of stormwater management facilities and the creation of new wetland areas, ensuring environmental sustainability.

The ICE® 44B performed flawlessly, efficiently penetrating sedimentary rock layers like siltstone and shale. To ensure the longevity of the structure, thermal-controlled concrete caissons were employed, reducing the risk of cracking. Advanced techniques like Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) were utilized, providing real-time data on pile quality to accelerate construction timelines and ensure a safe, durable foundation.
